Anna O'Brien Obituary

O’BRIEN, Anna Theresa passed away on February 3, 2021 at the age of 75 surrounded by her loving family. Anna was born in Tors Cove and spent much of her life working outside of the Province, in Scarborough and Brampton Ontario, settling back to Cape Broyle in her retirement. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and sister-in-law, she was known and well respected on the Southern Shore and in Ontario where she had many good friends and coworkers. Independent and hard-working, Anna believed strongly in education, her teaching career started at age 17 in Fermuese and then the one-room school in Tors Cove. She went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree and eventually a Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Toronto; teaching children to read was her passion. Predeceased by her loving husband Charlie in October 2020, parents Paul and Dorothy Ronayne, beloved brother and niece Martin and Tracey Ronayne. Also predeceased by parents-in-law Charles and Madonna O’Brien, brother-in-law Augustine O’Brien, nephew Brendan Kelly and brothers-in-law Ronald Hayden, John Walsh and Bill Kelly. Anna was strong and courageous, fighting her own cancer battle while helping Charlie, the love of her life for 52 years, with his recent heart breaking struggle. Anna will be sorrowly missed by daughters Julie (Dave) Moore, Lisa O’Brien (Jesse Croft), Coleen (Scott) Crane and grandchildren Jace, Amber, Madison, Ashton and Charlie. Anna was very close to her family she will be missed by her brother and sisters Joe (Peg) Ronayne, Mary (Wilbur) Rice, Rita (Vince) Lynch and by sisters and brothers-in-law Muriel Ronayne, Sheila Kelly, Florrie Hayden (Dermie), Aggie Walsh (Philip), Marion (Randy) Sturge, Linda Whelan, Rosie (Fred) Meaney, Dave (Carol) O’Brien, Steve (Pam) O’Brien, Walter (Jocelyn) O’Brien. Anna treasured her many nieces and nephews and had special relationships with her Crane and Hawkins cousins – thank you for your many kind words and visits. The family, would like to recognize the tremendous professional care received from nurse Michelle Rossiter, Dr. T. Squires, Dr. S. MacDonald, the Palliative Care team at the Miller Center, Katie and Dan at the Baltimore Family Pharmacy and her compassionate caregiver Pam O’Brien. This care made all the difference during a very trying time. The family would also like to thank the people of the communities on the Southern Shore and those in Cape Broyle in particular. Anna, like Charlie, believed passionately in helping others especially those from home. Anna was devoted to her faith and a leader in the church and the community; once acting as Mayor of Cape Broyle, and a determined advocate for those in the little communities who needed a leg up. So many of you were recipients of her kindness and repaid the same during the last two years - we will remember each of you. At her request, cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held at Ryan’s Funeral Home, Bay Bulls on Friday, February 5th, 2021 from 1 to 5pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, February 6th, 2021 at 11am, from Immaculate Conception RC Church, Cape Broyle.
