September 13, 2022 the good Lord called home one of the best! Austin Melvin a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, son, brother and friend passed away in the arms of his loved ones after valiantly battling cancer.
Austin was born to Philip and Isabelle and raised in Lamanche Village until the great winter monster waves hit the community in 1966. The family was forced to move to Tors Cove. He was blessed with 18 brothers and sisters ....all individual births. He made his living with a pick and shovel and made sure he put many to shame with his strength and work ethic. In the spring of 1972 he met his beautiful wife Thelma and was fortunate to celebrate 49 years of marital bliss. They went on to have 5 incredible children, Scott (Yvonne, Gracie and angel Zac), Dale (Sheena, Isabelle, Olivia), Lee (Leah, Shaemus, Brenna) Christa Butler (Paddy, Madison, Patrick and great grandson Aidan), Colin (Leanne, Jackson, Jonathon). His family was his life.
Austin loved the outdoors. He loved trouting, berry picking, bakeapple picking (yes we are aware they are berries but out of the league of the regular berry picking). This was always obvious when anyone walked into the house. Nobody walked out of the house without a bag of berries, some fish, homemade bread or maybe a pair of dirty underwear if that’s what was closest!
Along with his immediate family Austin leaves behind four sisters, Theresa, Molly, Joan and Mildred, 55 Melvin nieces and nephews, four Hagerty nieces and nephews, a very special sister in law, Juanita Hagerty. There are an endless number of friends grieving.
To all who had the honor to know this man they knew a kind, generous, fun loving, selfless, non-judgmental, gentle soul. In the words of one of his sons.....he was the Myth, the man and the legend! You will be missed and loved forever and a day. Fly free with the angels. Our love xoxo
