It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, brother, grandfather and friend, David Melvin at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 73 years of age.
He was predeceased by parents; William (Bill) & Shirley (nee Porter) Melvin, siblings; William (Billy) Melvin & Kevin Melvin and stepson Howard (Tommy) Harris.
Leaving to mourn with loving memories are his: daughter Lisa (Darryl) Howlett, son Michael Melvin, stepdaughter Wendy (Jason) Harris, sister Esther (Junior) Melvin, the mother of his children Donna Melvin and his pride and joy, his only grandchild Willow Howlett. She was the apple of his eye and would speak so much joy and happiness in his life. As well as a large number of nieces, nephews, friends and his Union Local 764 Ironworker’s brothers and sisters.
Dad was born December 31, 1952 just minutes before the stroke of midnight to first time parents; William and Shirley Melvin. He was the older brother to Billy, Kevin and only sister Esther Melvin. He grew up on stamps lane, St. John's where he went to school (sometimes) at St. Teresa's school.
He really enjoyed playing sports. This was evident in all the repairs his parents had to make to their home because dad would be showing off the latest wrestling and hockey moves.
As Dad grew up, he followed in his father's footsteps where he became an Ironworker of Local Union 764. This brought him all across Canada where he made many friends. Dad was an Ironworker for many years, this was a career he loved and was so proud of. Dad always wanted to help teach others his skills this is shown in the many messages the family have received of the memories they shared with dad.
Dad was the life of the party he loved music and would always be singing even if he didn't know the words he would just make them up. He would be the first and last one on the dance floor and would dance with everyone he had moves and would show them off no matter how embarrassing they were.
When dad wasn't working, he loved spending his time in La Manche where he taught us to fish. He loved being in the woods hunting or hauling wood. This was his happy place and where he retired.
When Willow was born, his only grandchild. New life sparked in him. He loved going to the park and playing with her. This was truly the most joy he could have. She was poppy’s little roaster bud.
We would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who took amazing care of dad the past few years at the Mount Pearl Square Dialysis Unit. We would also like to thank the staff at 7 East St. Clare's for making dad comfortable during his last moments of life. As well as the staff at connections for seniors for going above and beyond to help him, your support and kindness has not gone unnoticed.
At David's request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Ryan's Funeral Home, Bay Bulls on Wednesday, April 15 from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cape Broyle on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 11:00 am with inurnment to follow at Our Lady of The Cape Cemetery, Cape Broyle.
