It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Derek O’Brien of Cape Broyle, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 64 years surrounded by his loving family.
Derek never stopped fighting, no matter how sick he was he was determined to get up and carry on, whether it be on the boat, in the rink watching Kenneth play hockey, and just being there with his family; he never let his sickness interfere.
He was predeceased by his parents; Michael and Ellen (Nellie, nee Battcock), brothers: Gerard, Kenneth and Dennis.
Left with broken hearts but many loving memories are his wife of 36 years, Beverly, loving children; Dexter and Kelsey (Robbie) and two grandsons; Derek and Kenneth his best friend and right hand man.
Leaving to mourn his loving brothers: Wayne (Roxanne), Brian, Michael (Charlene) and Darryl (Julie), nieces and nephews: Christopher, Kayla, Jake, Felicity, Charlie and Sam. Derek leaves behind a large circle of family and friends.
Derek will be forever remembered for his strength, kindness and great love for his family. Derek had a love for the water, where he spent most of his life fishing and in his younger years he had a great love for fast cars. Derek spent his younger years racing his cars and trucks up and down the Southern Shore with his buddy Austin. Derek loved his kids and grandkids, when your son and grandson become your best friend it truly speaks to the special father figure a man is. He instilled in Kenneth his love for the water, fishing, his love for dogs (Mickey, Chester & Pal) and even his clothing choice for a few years.
We would like to make a special mention to all Derek’s doctors over the last 3 years, especially Dr. Rod McCarthy , Public Health Nurse Michelle Rossiter for her care and compassion. We would like to thank all those who visited, called and sent messages to show their love and support especially in Derek’s final days. The family would also like to thank the members of the community of Cape Broyle and fishing community for their continuous support during Derek’s illness.
At Derek’s request, cremation has taken place. There will be visitation on Wednesday, April 17th from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Ryan's Funeral Home, Bay Bulls. A graveside service will be held at Our Lady of the Cape RC Cemetery, Cape Broyle on Thursday, April 18th, 2024 at 11:00 am.
