Harold O'Driscoll Obituary

Surrounded by his loving, supportive wife of 60 years, Margaret, and many family members, Harold Patrick O’Driscoll, peacefully passed away at the Health Sciences Center on Monday, January 27th, 2025 at 86 years of age.

He was predeceased by his parents; Samuel and Elizabeth O’Driscoll, parents-in-law; Sylvester and Bridget Tee, sisters; Rose Tee, Regina Rice and her husband Clyde Rice, sisters-in-law; Catherine Ryan and her husband Nicholas Ryan, Marie Tee, honorary son-in-law; Spencer Collins and members of the Lynch and O’Driscoll families.

Left with many years of precious memories are Harold’s loving wife, Margaret, son Calvin (Pam) and grandchildren Sam and Molly. He will also be fondly remembered by Margaret’s niece, Geraldine Collins, her son Shane Collins, her daughter Krista Gruber (Matthew) and their daughter Eleanor, as well as his brother Dominic (Ann), brothers-in-law; Michael Tee and Willie Tee and a large circle of extended family and friends.

At the age of 18 years, Harold followed his father to Goose Bay to work in the NCO club on the American Army Base. He worked three jobs in order to build a home for his beloved Margaret. When he returned to the island he worked as a labourer on the construction of the Southern Shore Highway, until he found his niche with the steward department of CN Marine. He worked his way up through to the ranks to Chief Cook during his 30 year career with them. Even while Harold battled dementia during the last few years, he often woke Margaret up in the middle of the night wondering if his suitcase was packed for work in the morning or even wondering how he was going to get to the boat. He took great pride in his work and frequently told stories of his days on the boats. Working on the CN boats with a two weeks on and two weeks off schedule afforded Harold and Margaret the opportunity to support his son Calvin’s love of hockey and to travel Atlantic Canada in campers ranging from a soft top tag along in 1972 to his cherished Toyota motorhome, which they enjoyed well into his retirement years. Harold often enjoyed a cup of tea, his radio, and a nap in the camper when it was only parked in their yard.

Our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Emergency Department and the ICU at the Health Sciences Center for their care and professionalism towards both Harold and the family. Thank you also to Dr. Rod McCarthy and the staff at Bay Bulls Family Clinic for their care over the years. Although they only spent 9 months together at Meadow Creek Retirement Center, the care they both received was also greatly appreciated. Thank you to Wanda Williams from Quality Homecare, who made the last few months in their own home and the transition to accepting help outside the family a good experience. From the bottom of our hearts, a special thank you to all our families and friends for their support during this time.

At Harold’s request, cremation has taken place. Resting at Ryan's Funeral Home, Bay Bulls. Visitation will take place on Friday, January 31, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
