Born September 27th, 1945, Mary Emerina Carey of Bay Bulls went peacefully home on November 4th, 2023 at the age of 78. Predeceased by her parents Lucy (nee Williams) and Stephen Carey, brother-in-law Leo Puddester, grand-niece Ariel Rose Langdon, and niece-in-law Ellen MacPhee. Survived by her loving partner Joseph Budden and her sisters Bernadette Puddester and Donna O’Brien. Mary will also be missed by members of the Budden, Carey, and Williams Families.
Mary is survived by her nieces and nephew, who regarded her as their second mom, and lovingly referred to her as Mame their entire lives; Krista Puddester (Kris Langdon), Carla O’Brien (Neal Alderson), Stephen O’Brien (Shelley Sullivan) and Leah Puddester (Blair Paul). As her nieces and nephew became parents, Mame thrived in her role as a bonus grandmother to their children. They filled her life with joy and she never missed an opportunity to shower them with love. Brooke, Kieran, Marrin, Lucy, Declan, Reid, Nora, Eilidh, Aoife, Keir, and Bodhi adored their Mame and will carry her compassionate spirit and generous nature forward in all they do.
Mary was a respected member of the staff at the Waterford Hospital for her entire 37 year career. Mary treated patients and colleagues with dignity and kindness, and maintained many wonderful friendships with them to her final days.
Mary was also a pillar of her community. She was a dedicated volunteer for both her church and at St. Bernards Elementary school where many of the children also called her Mame and came to love her dearly.
Mary’s family would like to thank Dr. Rod McCarthy, the staff at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Sister Betty Morrisey, and Father Phillip Melvin for their many hospital visits and prayers. A special thank you to Gertie Duggan, RSW, for her loving care and guidance, and to the hospital vigil group of friends and family who kept watch over Mary night and day.
Mame was treasured by a wonderful group of friends, too many and too dear to list, but she cherished every one of them and counted herself blessed to be part of their lives.
