Mary Power Obituary

Mary Genevieve Power of Witless Bay passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the Health Sciences. Mary is now reunited with her longtime partner William (Billy) Stone, her parents John & Minnie Power (nee Mercer), sister Betty Rankin (John) & brother Larry (Bud) Power.

Mary is survived by her loving nieces Kathy Power (Ray) of Mobile, Ann (Roger) Sherba of Rocky Mountain House, AB, Susan Krock (Mike) of Red Deer, AB, Barb (Wayne) Sopotyk of Prud’homme, SK and Keith (Connie) Rankin of Sherwood Park, AB, sisters-in-law; Rose Power, Margie Ryan (Billy) and Mary Puddester, helpful brother-in-law Jimmy Stone (Mary), and of course her furry baby Maggie, who thankfully enjoys a happy homelife with her niece Kathy.

Mary began her extensive career as a fish plant worker at age 16. She worked right up until the cod moratorium & then at the crab plant. Many of her lifetime friends were people she had met while working in the plant. Mary also joined her co-workers to take classes to earn her GED. She worked hard and was so proud to earn her certificate.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Wade Mercer of Bay Bulls Family Practice, for his professional & compassionate care of Mary’s medical needs, enabling her to remain in her own home as long as possible. Also, to the Quality Home Care staff whose dedication & care made Mary’s life so much more enjoyable. It also made their day to hear a joke or two from her.

Mary’s move to Meadow Creek retirement home in Paradise brought new friends & experiences, to which she gradually warmed up; but never forgetting her Witless Bay connections. She made daily calls to friends & relatives, to catch up and share her jokes.

An additional Thank You to Deanne and Janine Colbert, who began as Caregivers but became exceptionally close friends to Mary.
They were truly her lifeline following her move to Meadow Creek. They were the ones whom she could always count on when she needed anything. It was really a two way street in that Mary ended up being a “Confidante” and Mentor to them in return.

Funeral Home arrangements have been entrusted to Joe Ryan of Ryan’s Funeral Home. Mass will be held at 10:00 am Monday, June 19th at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Bay Bulls. Inurnment to follow at Our Lady of Mount Loretta RC Cemetery.
