Scott Kelly Obituary

We are deeply saddened to share that Scott Kelly’s earthly journey ended on February 9, 2025. Scott was a wonderful husband to Mary Ann and wonderful father to Liam and Cian. Mary Ann was the love of his life and Liam and Cian were his pride and joy. Scott is predeceased by Kelly family members: parents Bill and Sheila, brother Brendan, grandparents Joseph and Annie, and uncle Brenden as well as O’Brien family members: grandparents Charlie and Madonna, uncles Charlie (Anna) and Gussie as well as Hann family members: Austin, Madonna, Adrian, Kevin and Donna and Daniel Shannahan.

Scott will be deeply missed and remembered by Mary Ann, Liam, Cian, sister Kim Kelly (Mike Maher), Brenda; Austin Hann (Susan); Edward, Janet (Shawn Walsh, deceased) and Gary Hann (AnnMarie); and brother-in-law Lally Shannahan. He will be remembered by aunts and uncles on the Kelly side: Basil (Sally), Maureen (Elroy), Pat (Jo-Ann), Dave (Bonnie), Dan (Karen), Brian (Dee Dee) and O’Brien side: Florrie (Dermie), Aggie (Philip), Marion (Randy), Linda, Davie (Carol), Stevie (Pam), Walter (Jocelyn), Rosie (Fred) and the Hann Family: Marguerite Kennedy.

A favourite uncle, cousin, and friend he will missed especially by many nieces and nephews on the Hann side especially Charmaine Shannahan (John Wile), Ryley Hann (Linda Williams), Jade Hann (Omar Zaki), Vanessa Antonello (Cory), Michael Hann and great nieces, nephews and grandnieces, especially Grace Wile; Alyvia and Nancie Williams and Elsie Hann as well as special friends Paul Walsh (Tish Coleman), Josie and Natasha Hayden, Desi O’Brien (Kat), Corwin and Carmen Boland, Katie and Colin Baird, Glen Hynes, Ronnie Harvey and colleagues from Scott’s Canadian Coast Guard work family especially: Patrick Turner, Dwayne Munden, Tony McGrath, Dmitri Hotjasevs and Trudy Chafe. He was also God Father to Ryley Hann, Troy Hayden and Hailey Walsh.

Scott was a family man who loved to spend time with his family – Mary Ann, Liam and Cian were his entire world. He especially loved to watch Liam and Cian play hockey and was a true hockey dad cheering on the boys, traveling with them as they played on teams across and out of province.

A proud Southern Shore man from Cape Broyle, Scott was an avid outdoorsman who loved to farm, fish and hunt. He enjoyed doing recitations, singing Irish songs, saying Irish blessings and dancing hearty jigs, he especially loved dancing with Mary Ann. Scott could turn his hand to anything – he was an excellent and creative cook (his pot pies were legendary) and was handy with a hammer. Scott was well read, knew a little about so many topics and was never shy to share his vast knowledge. He could contribute to any conversation.

Scott was a man of the sea having first trained and worked as marine cook travelling along the Labrador coast. He then continued his education at the Marine Institute until he earned the designation of Master, Near Coastal. For 27 years, he was proud to serve as a member of the Canadian Coast Guard where he started as a Steward, then Deckhand before becoming an Officer (Third Officer, Second Officer, First Officer and Chief Officer). Having worked aboard several Coast Guard vessels (Ann Harvey, Cape Roger, Henry Larsen, Leonard J. Cowley, Louis S. St. Laurent, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, Teleost) his work took him to the North Pole, Norway, Sweden, Greenland, and the United States. He then moved from the sea to the land where he served as Search and Rescue Coordinator with Marine Rescue Services Centre (MRSC).

Over the past numbers of weeks Scott and family experienced the love and support of so many who visited, reminisced, brought food and sent messages. The family have been especially overwhelmed by the support and generosity of Scott’s colleagues from MRSC and ROC with the Canadian Coast Guard and the friends of Liam and Cian and their families. We are also so grateful and appreciative to those who helped out in the past number of weeks especially Nicole Sharpe (Community Health Nurse) Dr. Rod McCarthy, Mandy Burke (Pharmacist), Dr. Zadorozny and Pain and Symptom Management Team, Scott (Paramedicine Program), Carmen Boland, Linda Williams, and Witless Bay Volunteer Fire Department.
